Silver Bracelets
From the tumulus cemetery comes a pair of silver bracelets dating to the 5th century BC.
They belonged to a young woman aged approximately 18–19, who wore them on her wrists. In antiquity, it was fashionable to wear bracelets in pairs, either above the elbow or as wrist ornaments, similar to modern usage.
These were valuable pieces of jewellery, imported to Abdera. The rounded hoop with animal-head terminals reflects an Eastern origin; in this case, the bracelets end in lion heads.
The young woman lived during a period of great prosperity for Abdera, marked by both private affluence and public wealth. This modest yet refined Classical piece of jewellery should be understood within that broader historical context.
